Mets’ Francisco Lindor shares eye-opening admission after brutal series sweep vs Phillies

The New York Mets just finished a quick two-game set against the Philadelphia Phillies, and they didn’t look good in the brief sweep.

Mets star Francisco Lindor spoke about the team’s struggles after their 4-0 loss on Tuesday.

“It’s part of the daily grind,” Lindor said. “It seems like we are in a month that the uphill fight is even harder.”

The Mets finished a 1-4 homestand against the National League East rival Atlanta Braves and Phillies. New York fell to 10-14 at Citi Field after getting shut out for the fourth time overall.

Lindor went hitless in the two-game set, going 0-8 against the Phillies. It’s been a tough season at the plate for the Mets shortstop, who does have seven home runs, but is hitting just .209 through 40 games this season.

Despite his challenges at the plate, Lindor clearly has a good approach. Earlier this season, he was asked how he stays positive through his early season struggles.

“Man, rely on my teammates. Rely on my wife. Rely on my daughters,” Lindor said, per the New York Post.  “The world is a beautiful place. It can get nasty at times. But it’s a beautiful place.”

“Understanding, it’s an uphill fight, you’ve got to stay the course no matter what,” Lindor added. “I’ve got to continue to compete day in and day out, and be myself. At the end of the day, I’m not going to be somebody else. I’ve got to be me.”

The teams head to Philadelphia to begin another two-game series Wednesday night, the second leg of an unusual home-and-home scheduled to accommodate their two-game set in London from June 8-9.

Aaron Nola pitched a four-hitter for his fourth major league shutout on Tuesday.

Philadelphia scored twice in the third inning against starter Jose Buttó on a hit by pitch and a bases-loaded walk. Bryson Stott had a run-scoring single in the ninth and Alec Bohm doubled home a run to finish with two RBIs.

Nola (5-2) did the rest against the Mets, throwing 73 of 109 pitches for strikes in his sixth career complete game and first since a five-hit shutout against the Cincinnati Reds in August 2022. He struck out eight and walked none. It was the third time in nine starts this season that Nola lasted at least eight innings.

After winning eight of nine games between April 11 and 20, the Mets are 7-14. While it is still early in the season, New York can’t afford to fall too far behind the Phillies and Braves in the National League East standings.

Managing to bounce back in their next two games against Philadelphia would go a long way toward helping New York get back into the mix. The Mets are currently 10 games behind the Phillies – and eight games behind the Braves – in the National League East.
